Welcome to the University of Melbourne Film Society weblog

The Melbourne Uni Film Society is about providing an environment for students with a passion or interest in film to come together and explore films they otherwise would not have come across, and so developing an appreciation for the vast world of cinema that lies outside the weekly blockbuster megaplexes. We screen films every Thursday at 6:15pm, in the 'widescreen room' on the 4th floor of the Arts Centre on campus (cnr Swanston and Grattan sts).

Membership costs $4 for UMSU members and $8 otherwise, which covers all the year's screenings. To join, simply come to a screening and sign up at the door.

Peeping Tom (1960)

Dir: Michael Powell (of the great Powell & Pressburger partnership aka Archer films)

Martin Scorsese is quoted to have said that this film, along with Fellini's 8 1/2, contains all that can be said about directing.

It's a psychological thriller about a man in the film industry who begins to kill women and film their dying expressions of terror (Otherwise known as snuff films).

Shocking audiences and stirring an immense controversy, Peeping Tom was a turning point in the landscape of cinema, and prompted Alfred Hitchcock, who released Psycho three months later, to do so without a press screening in order to minimise the media scare of his similarly impactful film.

Along with fleshing out the psychological root of snuff films, the film explores the inherent voyeuristic nature of the role of a film audience.

Roger Ebert's a massive fan, Rotten tomatoes give it a 100% fresh rating.
